another of our creative adventures at
the Soulful Escape to Bali in january 2014
will be shibori and indigo dyeing!
one of my favourite shops in Ubud is a
very unassuming little textile shop which
turns into a veritable treasure cave once you look more closely.
over the last few years i have bought many of their
hand-spun, hand-woven, plant-dyed textiles
and have become very friendly with the lovely couple
from east java that own the shop – Erna and Nofel.
nofel has also taught me indigo dyeing.
here you can see him making up a dye bath for me…
and i have been experimenting
with shibori – both on silk and cotton.
here you can see some of the stitching and binding
to prepare the fabrics for the dye bath…
and here are some of the results…
shibori is an ancient japanese art
of dyeing cloth with a pattern by
binding, stitching, twisting, folding, etc…
and we are very fortunate to be able
to use a natural indigo dye
at the soulful escape to bali.
(nearly all indigo dye produced today is synthetic)
we will lead you in exploring shibori techniques
and there will be silk and cotton fabrics available
at our 24/7 ‘art bar’ during the retreat.
towards the end of the week we will have an indigo dye bath ready
and you might even want to turn your indigo shibori fabrics
into a unique scarf or shawl to take home…
